Get It Tight

Growing up I was never one to exercise. I would play football with the guys and competed in gymnastics for a few years but once i hit middle school fitness and sports came to a end in my life. When i left high school i tried to begin working out with my military friends but was quickly disinterested and discouraged as they would all suggest completely different workout plans and diet regiments. I'd always been very petite regardless of what i ate but when I took on a full time college schedule while still maintaining 2 jobs my body began to change. I found myself tired all the time no matter how much I slept. I couldn't focus and found myself falling asleep in classes....

I decided when I turned 21 ( January 2008 ) that I would take charge of my health. I procrastinated like crazy and actually just started working out mid March. I do not know what my body needs exactly but I believe that any activity is better than the none i was previously doing. I've dedicated myself to jogging and running. I know it is not much and that I need to incorporate weight/resistance training. I hope to save enough $$ for a personal trainer to guide me and help me to change my poor "on the run / college" diet. Here are the results I have had so far:

April 2007:

April 2008:

I am impressed that I can see results after less than a month of regularity but I hope to achieve so much more.

What is your favorite way to get fit and how often do you exercise? I'd love to hear your fitness stories.

You're looking really good there, India... can't really tell the size from the first to the second... but I know you've gained some nice curves since last year.

My favorite exercises are...

Pull Ups...
Martial arts sparring (I hope you get into that one day)
and Cycling

Personally... I like to stand on my head and let all the blood rush to it until I get dizzy and pass out... but that's just me...

people give you different ideas becuase everyone's body is different. My chest will expand and quickly blow up so I spend more time with heavier weights on my legs.

The thing with weights is to make sure you are "burnt" after 8-10 reps. If you aren't then you aren't lifting enough weight and it will not help your body.

Don't worry about looking muscular. Thats a myth and it won't happen unless you are taking steroids. Plus female body builders work out for 6-8 hours a day. Its their job.

The best ways to get fit.. are to have someone there who knows the science.. teach you to live healthy and exercise correctly. Everything should start off with an assessment. Muscle imbalances are huge problems that should be corrected before any serious hypertrophy, power, athletic, or bodyfat reduction training starts. Cats who live sedentary lifestyles.. or have lax jobs that require a huge investment of time sitting on their asses.. generally get predictable imbalances that can lead to injury quickly. If they don’t know what they are, they start off doing the wrong exercises.

Example.. Cats on the computer for extended times during the day develop rounded shoulders. Rounded shoulders signify pecs and anterior delts that have had their resting positions altered. Meaning, they are contracted at rest.. tight. A tight pec causes it’s antagonistic partners (rhomboids, lats, posterior delts) to become lengthened at rest.. making them weak. But what’s the first thing a noob does when he gets to the gym? Bench press. Instead of the smart thing, which would be to work the back and stretch the chest until the shoulders reset their resting positions to the optimum physiological location. There are lots of predictable imbalances that need to be addressed before intense training starts. 90% of new members to major gyms in a recent survey injured themselves in the first three months. This is why.

After all is good with your body balance. You next have to determine your goal. I hardly think you want to become a bodybuilder, so skip the burn out at 8 to 10 reps. Those acute variables are designed for maximum hypertrophy gain, to bulk up size. Find out how you want to look, or what you need to train for. Then get a program with variables designed to elicit those adaptations in your body. If you get a trainer.. grill the HELL out of them to make sure they are not just Gym Science trained. There is an incredible amount of misinformation out there. A trainer with the ACSM or NASM certifications are definitely prepared to take you where you need to be, but still grill them. Some are good with passing tests.. but not so much at applying what really works.

When the training starts.. it’s a good idea to incorporate a little of everything into a workout.. provided you are ready for it, and it fits your goals. Daily flexibility and cardio training. Plus core, balance, reactive (or power), speed agility & quickness (SAQ), and resistance. Anything can be modified to suit your goals.. but some things you may want to skip altogether.

Even more important however.. than your exercise program.. are your diet, nutrition, supplementation, and rest and regeneration. If you are taking care of your body from the inside out, it will respond very positively to even the smallest and insignificant of workout programs. But don’t let that stop you. The combination of a great workout program, and taking care of yourself outside the gym works miracles. With your diet, learn to eat well. If your trainer cannot help, find a nutritionist and learn. It don’t take long. Go with Apex supplements. They are one of two companies I know that use a pharmaceutically licensed manufacturer. This means that you get what the bottle says you are getting, in an active form that is actually going to work. Rest and regeneration are supremely important as well. Your body will conform to the shape you want a hell of a lot faster when exposed to proper rest.
