1 In 4 Kids Go Without Health Care...

WASHINGTON, May 2, 2007
Children recieve checkups at a mobile health care clinic provided by the Children\'s Health Fund. *(CBS)

(CBS) Some uninsured children of the working poor don't go to the doctor's office; it comes to them.

They make too much for Medicaid but not enough to have their own insurance.

And 150,000 patients per year, nationwide, get free care from 21 mobile units provided by the Children's Health Fund. But a new report out Thursday from this non-profit group says far too many kids are falling into a huge health care crevice, CBS News has learned exclusively.

The group's report finds despite billions of dollars in government spending, more than one in four children still don't have full-time health care — a gap twice as big as anyone thought, CBS News correspondent Sharyl Attkisson reports.

"It's more than just insurance and lack of insurance, that are keeping children from getting medical care," says Dr. Irwin Redlener, president of the Children's Health Fund of Columbia University.

It's estimated that 9 million children are completely uninsured. But the new study says 11.5 million more kids end up without medical care for part of the year. And another 3 million can't get a ride to the doctor. That's more than 23 million children.

To close the gap, Redlener is on Capitol Hill lobbying for a dramatic expansion of the $5 billion federal Children's Health Insurance Program, or CHIP. Redlener wants to add 9 million people to CHIP, plus dental and mental health benefits and transportation.

The price tag for all that? "Really what we need is $60 billion. Between $50 and $60 billion," he says.

Getting that type of government assistance may be a long shot, but Redlener says it's cheaper than the cost of neglecting the medical needs of a generation of children.

Re: 1 In 4 Kids Go Without Health Care...

Buncha sorry a$$ parents ...ALL kids can get health care even if you are dirt poor from the government . take your sorry a$$ to the welfare office and get the coverage .Then find a damn way to the doctors office for gods sake .

They are your kids ...find a way there .

The article should read " 1 in 4 children cant go to the doctors office because the lazy parents either were too lazy to sign them up at the welfare office or the parents were too lazy to get the kid to the doctors office ."

Most people will read that article and think the government is killing kids , when it's the lazy parents fault ... they will give your kid FREE health care you lazy *****es , sign them up and dig through 10 different trash cans for bottle returns to get bus fare if you need to .

Re: 1 In 4 Kids Go Without Health Care...

I read that Speak ...but when it gives the total numbers of the uninsured and people that cant get to the doctors office it's not talking about 23 million people that make too much to get insurance . An extremely large part of that 23 million could be eliminated by just having a parent that parents .Then we would be able to see how many of the working poor actually make too much to get insurance .

I feel for the working poor , that was my mom and we kids growing up . If these other dipsh*t parents would get off their a$$es we could focus on the real problem of how to fund that problem .

alot of times i find that they dont have the money to pay the premiums for the CHIPS programs. I think its something like $25.00 a child.
