Before I was black,
the truth wasn’t in me,
and I
had no clue, how to set me free
Before I was black,
I thought it was only a color,
and I
had no clue what it meant to be called a sista or brotha
Before I was Black,
pride didn’t exist,
and I
had no clue there was a struggle for civil rights in my midst
Before I was Black,
the sun would set, the moon would rise,
and I
had no clue that so many of my ancestors had lost their lives
Before I was Black,
I’d follow the shadow of those who look, not like myself,
and I
had no clue I was being taught to hate who I am, in depth
Before I was Black,
I was ignorant, blind of my place here on earth,
and I
woke up one day, recognizing my true worth
Before I was Black,
I didn’t know the power, the voice I had within,
and I
finally felt the warmth of the sun and I became my friend
Before I was Black…
