I wrote this last month ... the first half first... then the second half 2 weeks later in March... so I guess it was 2 months then... but anyway... I got so inspired by the people who struggled before us (Martin, Harry, Rosa, Malcolm, etc) that I felt SO compelled to write this... but I was ALSO inspired by Obama to write something as well...so I put all my feelings into this one poem...
Freedom's Witness
They came from every mountain top
They came from every hill
Slaves freed from blindness
Slaves with new free will
They carried with them dreams
And ON them carried scars
Long lasting reminders of
Chasing for what is ours
Death followed them like hounds
Death lay on their doors
Yet bravely they walked on
Up the steps, they said "no more"
Through fire they survived
Changed, stronger than before
With the strength and prayers of their ancestors
With the love of all who came before
And so we ask their children's children
Generations and years removed
How will you carry on and on
Will you be greatly moved?
Will you bow down, eyes closed
Nodding in reverence
Those whom chain you and claim you
With none but hostile temperance?
Will you leave your loved ones behind
Alone, cold, caught in wolves claws?
Will you battle or surrender
To those whom lay down, on you, the law?
Or will you stand up… proudly…
Breaking shackles loose, free of pain?
No longer selling your soul, your body
For the short burst of emotional gain
Will you rise proudly, as does the morning sun
Beckoning change, calling for renewal
Calling for hope, calling for justice
Calling for the day freedom is your true jewel?
Will you?

Black people have become somewhat racist within themselves to a certain degree; it pisses me off to hear from a black person "she's pretty to be a dark skinned girl". As if dark skinned girls aren't pretty. BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL IN EVERY WAY!!!!!! - tatiana23
