Re: The Coldest WInter Pt. II
Maybe it’s cause I’m a dude.. but The Coldest Winter Ever felt like a complete waste of time after I finished reading it.
Don’t get me wrong, it was very well written.. and had me crackin up at parts.. For real, them bouncers playing her ass at the home where the video was gonna be shot, homegirl’s sister gankin all the money she just stole, and that part where dude had her locked in her room with a Rott right outside the door was funny.
But through the whole damn book, she stayed EXACTLY the same. She didn’t learn SH!T. Her character was completely static, nothing dynamic about her at all.. no growth from beginning to end, despite all that she was going through. And most of the characters appeared that way, as if there was nothing to them beneath the surface.
While the story may be praised for showing a desperate side of the hood from an insider’s perspective, I found it lacking severely in human complexities. As if.. maybe the author was looking down on them in subtle ways she might not have even recognized. I got the feel that she considered anyone caught in certain areas of life.. beneath her. And that whole part where Winter was reading the letters between SS and Midnight only confirmed it for me.
But hey.. Midnight was a cool cat.. It’ll be interesting to see what happens to him.. I’ll probably wait for one of ya’ll to tell me though..
